Introduction
The Catholic Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) module provides Catholic schools, colleges, and Multi-Academy Companies (MACs) with a structured, collaborative platform to evaluate their practice against the national Catholic Schools Inspection (CSI) framework (Section 48). It enables leaders to systematically evaluate Catholic Life and Mission, Religious Education, and Collective Worship.Conceptual Architecture Model
The Catholic SEF is structured into four core interconnected components:- Context Statements (
Context): High-level narrative statements detailing your school’s Catholic identity, mission statement, parish partnerships, sacramental life, pupil demographic profile, and diocesan setting. - Priorities & Inspection Trajectory (
Priority): Specific records detailing recommendations and areas for improvement identified during the previous diocesan/CSI inspection, documenting institutional actions taken and verified spiritual and academic progress. - Catholic Inspection Areas (
SefCatholicArea): Strategic inspection domains evaluating the core pillars of the CSI framework (Catholic Life and Mission, Religious Education, and Collective Worship). Each area carries an assigned Area Owner, a collaborative discussion stream, and five structured evaluative text sections (Summary, Actions Taken, Impact of Actions, Strengths, and Areas for Development). - CSI Criteria & Descriptors (
SefCatholicItem): Granular criteria itemising specific inspection expectations and evidence benchmarks. Each item is assigned an Item Owner, an evaluative status, and rich commentary referencing liturgical plans, RE pupil work, or external evidence hyperlinks.
Evaluative Rating Scales & Visual Indicators
The module provides intuitive colour-coding across areas, criteria items, and dashboard visualisations:1. Area Evaluative Ratings (SefAreaEnum)
Each inspection area is assigned an overall holistic evaluation:
2. Item Criteria Ratings (SefItemEnum)
Individual criteria within each inspection area are evaluated by evidence security:
3. Dashboard Visual Indicators
- Progress Spectrum Bar: Visual distribution bar illustrating the proportion of criteria evaluated across each status tier within an area or school-wide.
- Assigned Criteria Bell (
fa-bells): Indicates that the currently logged-in user holds direct ownership of one or more criteria within that domain. - Notification Paused Icon (
fa-pause): Shows that real-time email notifications for updates in this area are temporarily paused to facilitate multi-item drafting. - Comments Counter: Displays the number of active discussion notes logged on an inspection area.
Roles & Permissions Matrix
The module provides role-based access control to maintain confidentiality and foster collaboration:Core Screen Tour
1. Catholic SEF Hub (/sef)
The primary executive dashboard displaying:
- Global Progress Bar: Aggregate progress across all CSI inspection criteria.
- Inspection Areas Table: Searchable directory listing each Catholic inspection domain, evaluation rating, criteria progress bar, assigned Area Owner, and discussion links.

- Bulk Management Actions: Select multiple areas to pause notifications, resume alerts, or reassign owners.
2. Area Detail Workspace (/sef/{area})
The operational workspace for individual Catholic inspection domains:
- Domain Header: Displays domain title, overall evaluation pill, Area Owner contact link, and overall progress bar.
- Five Evaluative Text Sections: Rich-text cards for Summary, Actions Taken, Impact of Actions, Strengths, and Areas for Development.

Diocesan Trust & Multi-Academy Company (MAC) Synchronisation
For Multi-Academy Companies (MACs) and diocesan trusts coordinating inspection self-evaluation across Catholic schools:- Centrally Standardised Frameworks: Central diocesan teams can deploy standard CSI criteria templates across all schools. Synchronised areas display a locked icon (
isSynced). - Diocesan Quality Assurance: Ensures aligned evaluative standards reflecting diocesan education service benchmarks.
- Local School Autonomy: Individual Catholic academies maintain complete autonomy over local context, evidence documentation, and evaluative commentary.
