Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 places a statutory duty on schools to ensure their functions are discharged with regard to the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Most local authorities work with schools to fulfil this duty by requiring an annual safeguarding audit or self-review. The format of these reviews varies between authorities — some require schools to use a specific local structure, while others accept a comprehensive school-based review. The Safeguarding Audit module is designed to support both approaches, giving you a structured, evidenced record of your school’s safeguarding practice.

How the Module Works

The Safeguarding Audit module combines Section 11 checklists from a number of local authorities, covering their common cores as well as additional local items. Because all of them represent sensible checks on safeguarding process, most schools choose to use all the items included. You are not limited to what we provide — you can add further items to reflect your own LA’s specific requirements or your school’s safeguarding priorities.
Common items are preconfigured so you can start your review immediately. You can add further items, disable any that do not apply to your school, or remove them entirely if needed.

Key Features

  • Preconfigured s11 items — common items drawn from multiple LA frameworks are ready to use, giving you comprehensive coverage from day one.
  • Fully customisable — add new items, disable existing ones, or remove items that are not relevant to your school or local authority.
  • Senior and individual ownership — group requirements can be assigned to members of your senior staff, while individual items can be assigned to any member of school staff.
  • Evidence notes — record notes against each item to explain how your school complies or how you plan to develop practice further, building a clear evidence trail throughout the year.
  • Colour-coded review dates — overdue items, those due within four weeks, and those further ahead are colour-coded so you can prioritise at a glance.
  • Configurable review dates — review dates default to annually but can be set for any point up to 18 months ahead.
  • Annual reminders — Safeguarding Owners receive weekly email reminders for items that are overdue or coming up for review.
  • Printable audit report — print a full safeguarding audit as evidence of compliance for governors, Ofsted, or your local authority.
In a Multi-Academy Trust, certain Safeguarding Items can be managed centrally. Schools retain locally assigned Safeguarding Owners who receive reminders and participate in the coordinated review process.

Roles in Safeguarding Audit

Safeguarding Manager The Safeguarding Manager role is assigned by an Administrator. Safeguarding Managers can assign the Safeguarding Owner role to any user of the system and can manage all Safeguarding Areas and Safeguarding Items across the audit. Safeguarding Owner A Safeguarding Owner is responsible for specific Safeguarding Areas or individual Safeguarding Items. Owners receive weekly email reminders when reviews are overdue or due within the next four weeks. An area owner can also reassign individual items within their area to another user, provided that person holds the Safeguarding Owner (or Safeguarding Manager) role.
There is also a Safeguarding Viewer role for staff who need read-only visibility of the audit. Any user with view access can print individual areas or the full audit report.
